How we support

Fresh Thinking is Believe' Again's specialist eating disorder service, developed by Joanne King, in collaboration with West Lancashire's "Hope Street Project" and Merseyside's "Wonderwoman for Hormonal Health" to offer a warm, hopeful, trauma informed space where recovery feels possible and people feel truly understood. Our specialist practitioners are trained in person centred counselling, psychotherapy, CBT and DBT, offering trauma informed support for individuals experiencing eating disorders and for the families supporting them. We understand that eating disorders are often deeply connected to self worth, emotional wellbeing and life experiences, which is why we take a holistic, compassionate approach.  By placing self esteem and empowerment at the centre of our work, we empower individuals with knowledge and skills to develop healthier relationships with themselves, their emotions and their behaviours. Using evidence based behavioural change approaches, and the ASP™ (Age, Stage and Phase) model with specialist wellbeing outcomes frameworks, we support lasting, meaningful recovery without judgment or shame. Fresh Thinking offers three complementary elements of support: First Steps Resource: Our practical quick guide, Eating Disorder Recovery: Your first or next steps, designed to bring immediate relief and gentle, achievable first or next steps for anyone ready to begin or continue breaking the cycle. One to One Support: Our 12 to 16 week one to one programme, where people work alongside a specialist practitioner to build a healthier relationship with themselves and with food, drawing on a thoughtful blend of CBT and DBT alongside our self esteem approach™. Group Support: Nobody walks this path alone. Throughout their support, and long after it ends, people can access our online recovery community, a dedicated Fresh Thinking chatbot and a private online group so connection, encouragement and a sense of belonging are always within reach. Whether it is 3am, a wobbly afternoon or a quiet win worth sharing, there is always somewhere to turn and someone who understands.

A personal note from Joanne:

"I spent 30 years struggling with an eating disorder, and 20 of those years trying to recover, without success. I am now 8 years into what I describe as "real recovery". What took me 20 years, doesn't have to take you 20 years. With two very special colleagues, Margaret Bell and Sheila Byrne, we built Fresh Thinking as the service we wish had existed for us when we were struggling. From the bottom of my heart, I want every person reading this to know that recovery is not only possible, it is sustainable. With the right support, the right community and a kinder relationship with yourself, a life beyond your eating disorder is genuinely waiting for you, and you do not have to find it on your own. Congratulations on taking this step, and from this point forward give yourself permission to be "in recovery from an eating disorder" rather than "having an eating disorder" because words matter, and so do you. Welcome to recovery, Joanne"
