Ethical business

Doing good should be part of how business works.

Ethical business is about more than having good intentions. It means understanding where money, resources and influence go, who benefits, and how every decision can create more value for people and communities.

Business can create value far beyond profit.

During my career managing high-value, multi-sector partnerships, I became passionate about socio-economics and social return on investment. I wanted to know how much real benefit each pound created, and how much of that value reached the families and communities the work existed to serve.

This includes the positive economic externalities a business creates, the wider benefits that sit beyond a simple balance sheet. A contract might also develop local skills, improve wellbeing, build the capacity of a smaller organisation, reduce pressure on public services or open opportunities for people who have been excluded.

Those benefits are not accidental extras. They can be designed into the way an organisation buys, recruits, partners, delivers and measures success. The Business Fairy helps you make those choices deliberately, without turning your values into jargon or an exercise that lives only in a report.

My approach

Four principles for responsible growth.

Put people closest to the decision

The people affected by a service, investment or policy should have a genuine voice in shaping it. Listening early leads to better decisions and less waste.

Make every pound work harder

Good value is not simply the lowest price. It is the greatest lasting benefit created with the money, time, skills and resources available.

Build benefit beyond the contract

A thoughtful decision can strengthen local organisations, develop skills, improve wellbeing and keep value circulating within a community.

Share value fairly

Resources should reach the people and communities they are intended to serve, rather than being absorbed by unnecessary layers, processes or distance from the work.

Practical support

Put your values into everyday decisions.

Whether you are starting a social enterprise, reviewing a programme or trying to make an established business more responsible, we can begin with what is realistic for you now.

  • Review where your money, time and resources currently go
  • Identify the wider benefits and unintended costs created by your decisions
  • Build social return on investment into plans, partnerships and procurement
  • Involve staff, customers and communities in meaningful decision-making
  • Create practical measures that show who benefited and how
  • Turn ethical intentions into a realistic, accountable action plan

Let’s make your impact intentional.

Bring me the idea, decision or challenge you are working through. We will look honestly at who benefits, where value is lost and how your resources could achieve more.
